Improving Therapeutic Communication and Effectiveness using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Research shows that we can improve outcomes for our clients and service users by helping them more effectively adapt to the mental, emotional and interpersonal aspects of the change process with the use of CBT principles and concepts. Examples include dramatically improving medical adherence, changing problem behaviours and becoming more engaged in their own well-being.

This 1-day workshop is designed for clinicians, nurses, counsellors, social workers, case workers, corrections officers and professionals who support others to live healthy, active lives. We focus on the reality that understanding stress, depression, anxiety, trauma and the applicable aspects of CBT can help us establish stronger client rapport – and thus help us retain patients long enough to get positive outcomes.

This training is particularly relevant to clinicians and therapists involved in helping clients to successfully facilitate important lifestyle and behavioural changes as a goal of treatment. The workshop goal is to enhance the clinician or case workers face-to-face abilities to effectively introduce and reinforce relevant therapeutic, wellness, and lifestyle behaviours to a broad range of clients.

The workshop will focus on the following independent modules:

Module One:
Stress, Distress and Management – identification, understanding and training skills.

Module Two:
The Change Process – assisting and motivating others to successfully make lasting lifestyle changes (crucial to all effective therapeutic relationships with the key in making change stick and have lasting effect)

Module Three:
THE CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) Paradigm – developing specifics: strategy, listening, and communications skills to help improve the clients capacity to control their own behaviours and change maladaptive patterns. Here, we also think in terms of developing interpersonal skills for achieving rapport, building trust and gaining influence.

Module Four:
Practising interactions and Scenario Examples – working in groups to trial skills and explore common situations and responses. Q and A.
